Magic!
Shorty & the Tall Boys were rehearsing one day at Ceylinco Ballroom in October 1970 (definitely would have been a Sunday. We only rehearsed on Sundays) when Sunil went off for an urgent comfort break and Chandana went across the road for a packet of cigarettes (packet of three - cigarettes?). Lal went down the corridor to make a phone call while Rohan and Hiran worked out some chords to Mrs Robinson with Stefan.

Here they are 32 years later, back from that break. Now Sunil is very comfortable, Chandana has quit smoking and Lal's number is still busy. Rohan and Hiran think the one after G is an E minor with a flattened 5th but aren't quite sure. Stefan is out there somewhere entertaining the angels.

One Love

Rohan, Sunil and Hiran at Sunil's house, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Thursday 18 December 2002.
This was an unscheduled session and impromptu performance when Rohan and Hiran were on holiday in Sri Lanka. Lal couldn't join us on the day at short notice.

One Love 10.8 Mb (2:46 min)

Note that lost frames at the end of this song is from a dodgy video capture - the master DV tape is perfect.

Baila (video)

This was on a take on Sunday evening. It already had two false starts. I was momentarily distracted when the song started without me. So I'm being the go-go boy to add some complementary visual interest. The camera person appears to have dropped off a few bars before the end. That boring, huh?

I Can't Stop Loving You (video)

An unrehearsed impromptu performance that started when the cameras weren't running. Nicely picked up by Chandana! Pity about my sloppy organ (as usual just when I'm up for it my organ lets me down!)

Evil Ways (video)

Wait for the introductions at the end. Groupies galore. Look out for Nihal Perera in his tight trousers. This is probably the track I enjoyed the most. I remember back in 1970 hearing this Santana track in Chandana's house and wishing I could play the organ solo. Still wishing!
Running time 4:18 min

I Saw Her Standing There (video)

Featuring the incomparable Amala straight from her show in Las Vegas (a cafe near Borella). This one is worth every minute of the 18 Mb download! The sound is great, punchy drums, lead guitar that cuts through your loins and some action from the girls. Another complete song and more.

Bye Bye Love (video)

Cool ending, quite unrehearsed.

Note: All the above video clips are from Lakshman's DV camera NTSC, with internal mic and auto level. Damn good sound!

Woolly Bully (video)

This is one from Saturday afternoon, only the second number we tried after Chandana arrived from LA (following our mishaps with the BART!). It might sound like the lead guitar is a bit too loud. Personally I think it adds to the spontaneity of the occasion and Rohan gets an authentic 60's lead solo out of it. This is from my Sony DV camera with external stereo mic in the middle of the room and manual (fixed) recording level.

The following video clips are from Saturday 5 Oct evening, from my camera.
DV Tape 'HD'. 0:04 - 0:23

Sugar Sugar/Happy Together 768 kbps (19.1 Mb)
I'm a Believer 768 kbps ( 4.1 Mb)
Vio Como Va 768 kbps ( 12.2 Mb)

Another set of unplanned and unrehearsed numbers.

Sleepwalk 768 kbps (13.3 Mb)
This is one of several versions of Sleepwalk. This one is a little lazy probably because we had played it several times earlier in the day and getting a bit bored with it. Rohan's lead guitar is perfect as usual.

Honey Don't

I have cut bass on these new clips. This part of the MD recording is slightly overloaded and there is a little distortion. It's ok on the video, however.

Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes

The beginning of this take is its high point. It goes downhill after that! Rohan, your harmony is perfect. I still think the lower harmony that you did is the right one. It's too high to harmonise above the melody. Not without tight trousers. Try and spot how many times I go off key?

MP3 (2.2 Mb)

Walk Don't Run

This track runs and walks at the same time. The Ventures didn't get it as right as this. But then they hadn't heard this version. Marvel at the drum solo. And then marvel at it some more.
