Karl
Katz and his band from Germany has been bringing jazz standards
to the Colombo Hilton over the Christmas holiday season for the
past 5 years. I was lucky to hook up with them during our short
visit to Sri Lanka in 2003.

Karl, you're a legend. It was a pleasure and a privilege
meeting you Sir. As you can see from some of the clips Charly
never stops laughing and he is a superb compere. Manfred,
your fingers glide over those keys like a dream (see Lady
Is A Tramp video clip) and is there a song you don't know? By
the way, the word 'who' doesn't begin with an 'h'! Helmut
is arguably the hunkiest double bass player in all the world. This
guy is either a male model in his spare time or an in-demand porno
star! When you hear Gert on the drums you just
got to swing man! The best things come out of Stuttgart - Gert and
my car.
Thanks
to the Hilton Hotel, Colombo. Harish the sound man (hey, teach your
craft to the deaf sound guys in Karachi!) Our guests from Rent-A-Crowd
Sunil, Amala, Darshini, Tilak and his friends, Nissanka, Senaka,
Lal, Kirti and his wife Doris, Romesh, Laurensz and Shameem and
all their friends, my mum and my sisters and Mike. Neil and Dilki.
Thanks also to Anil, Desi, Aftab and anyone else who came on the
wrong night. All those who took turns at operating the DV camera.

Molly's
is an Irish pub owned by Nalin Abeyratne located
near the Beira Lake in the heart of Colombo. To our surprise we
came across Prageeth and Adrian
there who we had met a few days earlier at the Deli Market at the
World Trade Centre - two guys doing a guitar and vocal routine.
The clips are from a short impromptu set I did with Charlotte and
with Adrian and by myself.

I heard
that a school friend of my sisters, Chintha, is
now the resident piano player in the foyer bar of Mt Lavinia
Hotel, playing a white grand no less! I dropped in to say
Hi after more than 30 years we did some Sinatra, Cliff and Elvis.
Here is an attempted pseudo-operatic version of Let
It Be and Portrait Of My Love, unrehearsed of
course.
Portrait
Of My Love (studio demo recording MP3)
Mt
Lavinia Hotel was one time the Governor's Mansion. It was featured
in the movie Bridge Over The River Kwai which was filmed in Ceylon
in the 1950s.
1
January was Charlotte's birthday celebrated at the Hilton
gig to try and surpass the excesses of the previous night at the
Colombo Swimming Club's New Years Eve bash. Although my mum Myrtle
started me off in music all those years ago (she is now 84) she
had never seen me perform in public before. The Hilton was a good
place to start. To get in the mood I did a couple of songs for her
in her house earlier that day for her approval. Here is All
Of Me from that.
The
concert by the Merry-An Singers at the Lionel Wendt
Theatre on 21 December and later at St Andrews Scots Kirk blew me
away for two things. First Andre David's Sinatra
(he even looks like a young Frank) and a masterpiece of O
Holy Night by soprano Anjali and the choir.
I share them with you here (though my recording quality does fall
below the quality of the performance but you'll get the general
idea). Musical Director: Mary Anne David.
Stefan
Manricks was the life and soul of Shorty &
The Tall Boys in 1970 when we played at Ceylinco Ballroom.
Sadly, he passed away in Australia in his early 20s and far too
young. His younger brother Laurensz was visiting
from Oz and we managed to steal a hurried 30 min jam shortly before
we had to catch a plane back to London. Here is a choice moment
or two from that.

The
Elvis Show and Dinner for the Rotary Club in December 2003 now
seems like eons ago. Hear what Elvis would have sounded like if
he lost his voice on the night! Anyway, the gig raised enough money
to build a school giving English language to poor children in Lyari,
a suburb of Karachi.
